When pollutants bond strongly to your cars surface, and normal washing will not remove these bonded pollutants, other measures need to be taken to remove them. The good news is that there are good products that can remove these surface contaminants. It just remains for you to take the extra step that will give your car the shine and luster you desire.

Clay Bar

In the 1980’s a car cleaning product called “detailing clay” or “clay bar” was developed. It is a mixture of resins designed to remove over-spray from the surface of painted surfaces without the use of polishing compounds or harsh chemicals. Detailing clay, often called clay bar, is a soft, sticky, clay-like product that will remove contaminants from automotive surfaces such as paint, glass, and plastic. As the patent for this material has now expired, there are many companies that are now manufacturing detailing clay for automotive care.

Before using a clay bar, the car is first washed to remove as much dirt as possible. This is to prevent dragging dirt particles across the paint surface which could cause swirl marks while using the clay bar. Clay bar has a putty-like consistency and feels a bit like plasticine. It is used together with a lubricant to pick up any contaminants on a paint’s surface that cannot be removed with regular washing.

TurboRub®

Drawing on developments in polymer technology, a new advanced product for car care has been recently developed. TurboRub® uses an advanced rubber polymer technology to attract contaminants to its surface. TurboRub’s® rubber polymer has been used to develop an assortment of car cleaning pads. These synthetic pads act similar to clay bar, yet can be washed and re-used! These pads can be washed multiple times.

As clay bars generally tend to be smaller and cannot be washed, they usually need to be discarded after about 10 uses. A TurboRub® pad can often last for 50 or more uses.

As clay bars are prone to drying out, they need to be kept in sealed containers or covered with plastic. TurboRub® pads do not need to be covered
